2020-21 Class Descriptions

For all of our Coop Preschool classes, there are a few components that are important to understand.  The Coop model thrives from joint teacher and parent interactions and ownership of the preschool.  Each class has a professional teacher as well as expectations on parental involvement, such as "working" in the classroom at least weekly on a schedule appropriate for the age of the children.  A caregiver such as a grandparent or nanny is allowed to participate instead of a parent if that works best for your schedule.

In addition, there is a monthly parent education meeting where professional parent educators from the Seattle Central College lead a discussion on topics selected by the parents.  Our parents have found the Co-op a compelling and rewarding model when we all work together to provide the best learning and play environment for our children - feel free to reach out for a chat or to learn more if you have questions on the Coop model.

Tots Class (age 1 by Sept 1, 2020)

A parent or caretaker attends each class with the child for the Tots program.  This class meets twice-weekly in the evening on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00pm - 5:30pm. Erica is the teacher and the monthly tuition is $165*.

  • Class time includes opportunities for exploration and socialization.

  • Children engage in free play and exploration, which includes developmentally appropriate opportunities for art, sensory, pretend play, fine-motor manipulatives, and blocks.

  • Class begins with a shared snack brought by the parents on a rotating basis and stories, continues with free play/exploration and large-motor playtime, and concludes with a brief circle time with music, movement and literacy activities.

Twos Class (age 2 by Sept 1, 2020)
The Toddlers class is offered twice-weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00am-11:30am. Erica & Elizabeth share the teaching responsibility for this class and the monthly tuition is $246*.  A parent or caregiver only attends one class a week with the child.

  • The class begins with exploration and free play at the learning centers in the classroom. The learning centers change often and include activities such as painting at the easel, play dough, sensory table filled with tactile objects, dress-up, pretend kitchen area, blocks, puzzles, and library area.

  • Following free play, the class sits down together to enjoy a snack brought by parents on a rotating basis. The sharing of snack is an opportunity to build fine-motor and social skills.

  • After snack, the children participate in a group circle time with music and movement, stories, dramatic play, and group games.

  • Following snack, the class engages in gross-motor play, either  inside using our climber and other play equipment such as cars, scooters, balls, etc., or  outside on the lawn or at Volunteer Park (weather permitting).

  • To close the day the children gather for a goodbye song and stamp.

Preschool Class (ages 3-5 by Sept 1, 2020)

The Preschool class is offered three times weekly, from 9:00am-1:00pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Elizabeth is the teacher. The monthly tuition is $358*.  A parent or caregiver attends one class a week with their child. Children enrolled in this class can also enroll in the Preschool Add-On Classes as their age allows (see below).

  • The Preschool day will follow a class schedule that includes group time (ie, circle and lunch) and long periods of choice time.

  • Certain centers in the room are constant. Every school day will include a math table, a writing area (open for drawing, paper creations and self-directed writing), a dramatic play area and an opportunity to build with blocks.

  • There will be daily art activities and many opportunities to be creative (and messy).

  • Besides just natural times to make scientific inquiry, the teacher will present a science experiment once a week.

  • The class will play outside up to an hour daily unless the weather is particularly bad.

  • Kids will eat a snack provided by the scheduled family in the middle of class and finish the day with lunch together that each child brings from home.

Kindergarten Readiness (age 4-5 by Sept 1, 2020)

The Kindergarten Readiness class is open to all children ages 4-5 years old that are enrolled in the Preschool class (see above) or have been previous students at CHCP (see above) and will be attending Kindergarten the following school year. This add-on class will be held on Mondays from 1:00pm-3:30pm, and creates a full day of preschool to help prepare for a Kindergarten schedule.  Elizabeth is the teacher and the additional monthly tuition is $150*

*CHCP will charge 50% tuition when school is online and during times when there is a hybrid of online and in person instruction when less than half the total weekly class time is spent online. Once the class begins to meet half or more of the total class time in person, we will go back to 100% tuition charge.
